Audrey Tan, DPT, CIYT
Audrey is the owner of Body Ease Physical Therapy & Yoga. She has been helping people improve their health and wellness for 20 years, by teaching people how to move better and feel better, and as a result, live better.
Audrey is a licensed physical therapist, specializing in Fascial Counterstrain. She earned her Doctorate of Physical Therapy degree from California State University, Fresno, and has studied Fascial Counterstrain extensively since 2014, both through the Jones Institute and also the Counterstrain Academy. Counterstrain immediately resonated with her Iyengar yoga background – the approach was gentle, relaxing, viewed the person as a whole person, and above all, practiced ahimsa (non-harming). Fascial Counterstrain has its roots in Osteopathic medicine, which focuses on preventative health care, or wellness, not just treating illness.
Audrey is also a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher and a Yoga Alliance registered teacher at the E-RYT500-hour level. She graduated from the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco’s teacher training program and has been teaching Iyengar yoga since 2001. Audrey has studied in India with the Iyengar family and is also a certified Yoga for Scoliosis teacher, after apprenticing with Elise Miller, author of, “Yoga for Scoliosis.”
Audrey’s physical therapy knowledge and experience informs her yoga teaching. True to the teachings of Iyengar yoga, Audrey emphasizes safe anatomical alignment of the body and excels in modifying poses to make them accessible to all levels and abilities of students. Audrey’s yoga teaching also influences her physical therapy practice. Recognizing the importance of healthy movement, she often prescribes yoga therapy in place of traditional physical therapy exercises, which promotes whole body health, rather than just focusing on an injured area, taking into account that everything is connected. The combination of Iyengar yoga and physical therapy is synergistic and promotes healing, both in body and mind.
